Trump should lose his Secret Service Detail…

…if he is found guilty in a court of law, of the things he is being accused of.

This morning, the talking heads on the news were discussing what to do with Trump if he continues to violate the terms the different judges have given him in his various cases while awaiting trial. Surely they couldn’t jail him, even if he continued to agitate his base and kept harassing and threatening potential witnesses and officials involved in these cases against him. How would that work out with his Secret Service Detail?

I think that this question has an easy answer.

Trump is now in the United States court system. In that system, he is like any other citizen in the country. If he violates orders from the court, then The consequences should be the same for him as for any other defendant. Remember, Justice is blind. This also means she doesn’t see whether you are rich or poor, black or white, and everyone before her is treated equally, in theory anyway.

If Trump is found guilty of the crimes he is accused of, then he is a convicted criminal, and he should immediately lose any privileges he has enjoyed as a result of having held the title of U.S. President.

It is ridiculous to think that he should hold on to the privilege of Secret Service protection. Would he get to keep that as a convicted murderer?

In my opinion, Trump committed treason against the United States and the Constitution on January 6, 2021. He has refused to take part in a peaceful transition of power, he has tried to change the outcome of the Presidential election in Georgia, and he has tried to change the outcome of the national Presidential election by engaging in the conspiracy of the fake electors’ scheme, he has interfered with an official proceeding of the U.S. government by trying to get Mike Pence to stop the electoral vote count. This actually succeeded for a few hours after he lit the proverbial match and started an insurrection, sending a mob to attack the Capitol, an event during which several people died and lawmakers had to hide, and in Mike Pence’s case, flee for their lives. Trump sat by idly for hours while the insurrection was unfolding instead of sending help, like the National Guard, to defend the Capitol from the insurrectionists.

If found guilty in a court of law, for any one of these, or other things he stands accused of, like the mishandling of Top Secret documents for example, Trump should no longer enjoy the privilege of Secret Service protection.

Secret Service protection is a privilege that “We the People,” in the form of our government, extend to our former Presidents for the rest of their lives unless they don’t want it anymore. It is done to acknowledge their service to the country. However, for the type of conduct that Trump has engaged in, disgraceful, treasonous, criminal actions, the government should not hesitate to terminate that privilege.
