…an unwelcome intrusion that usually results in the host being hollowed out and leaving them dead.
Now, whether Trump is more like the Zombie Ant Fungus Ophiocordyceps or Ichneumonidae that turns spiders into Zombies or perhaps the Emerald Cockroach Wasp which turns cockroaches into Zombies so they can lay their egg on them, it is up to you to decide.
Then again, you may think that Trump is more like the Hairworm (Spinochordodes tellinii), a parasite that lives in fresh water and turns grasshoppers and crickets into Zombies or perhaps you can see the resemblance to the single-celled parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which infects animal cells and causes infected rodents to exhibit unusual and self-destructive behavior.
I am afraid that the Republican Party is way beyond help. Trump’s seed has killed its soul, paralyzed the brain and now it is only a mere shell of itself while the hatchlings are feeding on its carcass.
Creatures like Rand Paul, Ron Johnson, Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, John Kennedy, Marco Rubio, Tommy Tuberville , Kevin McCarthy, Jim Jordan, Dan Bishop, Lauren Boebert, Madison Cawthorn, Andrew Clyde, Matt Gaetz, Louie Gohmert, Paul Gosar, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Elise Stefanik, Doug Ducey, Asa Hutchinson, Ron DeSantis, Brian Kemp, Mike DeWine, Henry McMaster, Kristi Noem, Greg Abbott, national and state Republicans who have benefitted from the poison that Trump has injected into the body of the Republican Party and who now feed on what is left of it, claiming to be conservatives when in reality they are (more or less) racist authoritarians with fascist leanings, trying to burst forth in the presidential election year of 2024.
They cater to and attract white supremacist and racist hate groups as well as the loony tunes conspiracy nutters that is QAnon.
These power hungry parasites will sacrifice their followers for political gain by lying to them about the dangers of Covid-19, by making the wearing of face masks a political issue, by urging their supporters not to get vaccinated against the disease, claiming it to be an intrusion into their personal freedom (while denying the same freedom, for decades, to women who want to decide about their own body when they are pregnant), while they themselves have been vaccinated against this deadly disease. They further try to instill fear into their followers by lying to them about immigrants, saying that the Biden administration is allowing immigrants to come into our country, claiming that many of these immigrants are infected with Covid-19, and that the Biden administration is helping them to spread throughout our country in order to infect white, Anglo-Saxon Americans. This is part of “replacement theory” that many white supremacist and fascists have been using for decades to scare simple people into following them, since they will fight the “intruders.”
This evil and vile doctrine is now being embraced and repeated by many in the Republican Party as well as, of course, by the lead Storm Trooper, Tucker Carlson and many of his co-workers at the Fox network.
Not all conservatives are racists and haters, but through their ideology they have enabled these types of groups to find a home in their party and these people, with the rise of Trump, have hollowed out what used to be the Republican Party and are using the name and what is left of the carcass, to try and grab power by any means possible, including a coup or, since that has failed, by severely restricting voting rights in individual states run by Republican Governors, for many black and brown Americans.
Our only hope to avoid losing our freedom, democracy and way of life is that all sane people in this country will be on alert and will turn out by the millions in the next elections, even if they have to wait in line for days, and throw the fascists, hates and racists out of the office they are holding or block them from taking office in the first place.
Unfortunately, we can not depend on our U.S. Congress to do the right thing because Senators Sinema and Manchin are not willing to vote with their party to do away with the Filibuster in the Senate to be able to do what it takes to pass a law protecting voters’ rights. The current law has been weakened by a decision by the Trump Supreme Court, allowing states to go ahead with their new voter suppression laws, disguised as actions to “protect the vote.”
