I just want to point out…

…people in the media may want to express themselves differently when it comes to voting for Democrats in the midterm election.

Yesterday evening, I was watching “The ReidOut,” on MSNBC, when Ms Reid was talking with a guest about the midterm elections. The guest was saying something like, “voters need to put more Democrats into office in the midterms so that we can prevent or reverse some radical moves and decisions by the Supreme Court and by Republicans in many states.”

Joy Reid was then posing the question of why voters would put more Democrats into power when Democrats seem not to be using the power that they have now.

I know that the question was posed in order to allow the guest to further explain the point. However, I think that Ms Reid, and other people in the media whom I have heard say similar things on this subject, may want to be careful in how they state this question, even if they are just playing devil’s advocate. People may hear the question without listening to the answer. They may begin to doubt the usefulness of going to vote in the midterms in November, especially if they were going to vote for candidates of the Democrat Party.

It is not that Democrats do not want to use their power, they can’t use it.

With a 50:50 split in the Senate, they are being blocked by two of their own senators, Manchin and Sinema, from doing away with the filibuster rule. Doing away with the filibuster is important because right now, Democrats need at least ten Republican Senators to sign on to most proposed legislation. And as we know, Republicans rarely do anything with Democrats. The latest exception being the gun bill, tightening gun laws mildly, after the shootings in the grocery store in Buffalo, New York, and at the school in Uvalde, Texas.

Republicans, and I guess Manchin and Sinema too, are claiming that doing away with the filibuster would end bipartisanship in the Senate. But who are they kidding, the time of bipartisanship, reaching across the aisle to work together for the good of the country, is long past.

Not just that, Republicans now close their eyes and ears to unethical, corrupt and even criminal behavior in their own ranks. They twice failed to join Democrats, in spite of overwhelming evidence, to impeach and convict a crooked President.

Republicans declined to have a bipartisan commission in the Senate to investigate the circumstances of the insurrection. This investigation was taken up by a bipartisan commission in the House of Representatives, made up of five Democrats and two Republicans, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, who have courage and integrity. These two then became pariahs in their own party, FOR HELPING TO FIND THE TRUTH!

Saying that “Democrats do not want to use the power they have been given,” is plain wrong.

In order to solve the problem of power that can not be wielded, Democrats need to have fifty-two seats in the Senate. With two more Democrats in the Senate, they can get around the obstructionists, Manchin and Sinema, do away with the Filibuster, paving the way to simple majority rule. Of course, not only do Democrats need to win two more Senate seats, all Democrats currently in the Senate, who are up for re-election during the next midterms, also need to keep their seats.

On the state and local level, it is also imperative to tip the balance of power in favor of Democrats. In many Republican led states, abortion rights, voting rights, rights on gender equality, basic human rights, are being stripped away from women, black, brown and poor people and from people in the LGBTQ+ community. School curriculums are being attacked, books are banned from school libraries…the list goes on.

This scary trend can be reversed if voters replace the Republican Governors and State Representatives with Democrats. An uphill battle, in light of the gerrymandering in favor of Republican candidates in many states, but a battle we must fight nonetheless.

Republicans have shown themselves to be ruthless and evil. They are power hungry and without remorse. They will lie, cheat and steal to get what they want, or to hang on to what they have. We have witnessed these things, and worse, on January 6, 2021, when they tried to overthrow our government.

Republicans would sell their own grandmother to the Devil, if he gave them power in return!
